REJUVINATED AT 160

Bringing the Victorian Splendour Back to Tom's

We have recently completed a two stage programme of renewals to bring Tom's back to its former glory. We've stripped out unnecessary cabling, lost the old smoke busters, polished and restored the brasswork, brought the old wood back to life, refurbished our furnishings, restored our glorious tiles and parquet floors and installed fabulous new toilet facilities. Pop in to Tom's to experience it in all its Victorian fantasy splendour. We've always been lucky to have this building, and now we're even prouder to welcome you in.

Our Story

Tom's was established by husband and wife team Thomas and Sarah Studd back in 1867. Housed in the spectacular James Binney House, Manchester's first steel framed building. The terracotta exterior, green tiled interior, rich wooden panelling & bar, and hearty Best of British food is what established Mr Thomas's as a Manchester institution.

When it opened, the original Manchester Town Hall was located directly opposite on Cross Street. The mighty Royal Exchange was just 50m up the road and the industrial revolution, spearheaded in the region, had made Manchester the place to be.

Tom's quickly became the place to be. And when Thomas took ill after just a few years, Sarah took the reigns and forged her way as a respected force of nature in a man's world. Her daughter, also Sarah, took over after her and unfortunately the family line ran out. But Tom's remained the place to be.

For the next 100 years it was managed by a succession of landlords, their names listed on our guilt lettered board at the rear of the restaurant, before Steve Pilling and Roger Ward took over in the 1990's.

Roger still owns the Victorian Chop House Company today, upholding proud independent values in this historic and beautiful building.

There's nowhere else quite like Tom's.

We are very much a restaurant that was designed for a different time.

And we love that.

We haven't called it renovations, because - restrooms aside - we haven't changed anything. We've simply brought what was already here back to life.

We are very proud of the work that's been done. Please pop in, enjoy a pint and a pie, and soak it all in.
